We are devoted to serving the children in our local community and also children all across the country and worldwide through unique and innovative service projects and fundraising initiatives.

Our members are an eclectic mix of ages, genders, occupations, backgrounds and interests. We are all passionate about making Hartwell, Hart County and the World a better place for children so they can thrive.

Our Kiwanis Team Serving Our Community

Kiwanis Upgrades Kids Playground

Kiwanis members dedicate the upgraded and refurbed Children’s Playground at the Hart County Botanical Gardens. The project was part of Leadership Hart 2024. There was a ribbon cutting on the project on April 24, 2024. The family of Walter Gordon was there as several things were dedicated in his memory. This is the playhouse put up by Kiwanis years ago. Woody Matthews headed up the refurbishing of this kids facility.

Kiwanis Key Clubbers Cleanup Crew

Hartwell Kiwanis and the Hartwell Key Club teamed up April 23 to pick up trash and litter at the Long Point Recreation and the Gum Log Mega Ramp. After the cleanup, Kiwanis sponsored a cookout for all participants.

Kiwanis Commitees and Their Purpose

Annual Golf Tournament

The primary objective of the Kiwanis Hartwell Golf committee is to raise money for an
annual fundraising golf tournament. The “Kiwanis Fore Kids Golf Tournament” is played
at popular golf courses like Arrowhead Golf Course or Cateechee Golf Club. Committee
members raise money by recruiting sponsorships from local businesses and from the
entry fees paid by the tournament participants.

Blue Magoo

This is a weekly raffle for members to try and win half the “pot” or total accumulated
funds to date. The other half of the monies raised go to the club for the service project
fund.

Boy Scouts

Hartwell Kiwanis is the sponsor of Troop 33 of Scouting USA. In addition to annual
financial support, we maintain direct contact with the adult leaders. Our chair is both the
official representative to the Northeast Georgia Council and the chair of the local troop
committee. When requested, our club can participate directly in troop activities, in which
case we must be registered adults with the Council and certified for youth safety. We
also currently are sponsoring Cub Pack 28 but only by providing the official
representative to Council.

Building

This committee consists of members who build decks, porches, sunrooms, etc for
people of Hartwell. Monies made from these jobs fund our many contributions to the
needs of kids in Hart County.

Bulletin, Website, Public Relations

Steve Carswell prepares the bulletin for each week about the prior Kiwanis meeting. It
has club news, the summation of our prior meeting and any needed communication for
the other members. The Hartwell Sun is also sent newsworthy items about our
charitable donations as well as a picture of our community presenters. These posts are
also included on the Kiwanis Facebook site as well. This committee will also add
additional information to our website which will be updated regularly.

Community Service

This committee identifies local needs and organizes projects that improve the
community. Members work together to plan hands-on service activities, coordinate
volunteers and partner with local organizations to make a positive impact where it is
needed most for the kids of Hart county.

Dance Party

This committee arranges musical performances to raise funds for the kids of Hart
County. This annual fundraiser uses popular entertainment to sponsor dances and/or
outdoor concerts for the local community to enjoy.

Finance and Fundraising

This committee suggests fundraising opportunities to the Kiwanis club. The Board of
Directors oversee and approve these proposals and the club members implement these
efforts.

Hart Pecans

The pecan sales fundraiser utilizes Kiwanis members to sell 15 bags of assorted
pecans or contribute $50 to the club. We base the annual price of the pecans based
upon the cost of the product Shermer Pecans charges us. Scott Hardigree, chair of the
committee, orders the product and Fort and Reece Oglesby store and distribute it to the
Kiwanis members for resale.

Hospitality and Motivation

This committee fosters member engagement, recognition and a welcoming atmosphere
throughout the year for the Kiwanis Club of Hartwell. The committee plans and
coordinates social gatherings and appreciation activities that strengthen connections
among members and support club traditions. Responsibilities include organizing the
annual steak cookout and coordinating the club’s Christmas party. The committee also
promotes participation, celebrates member contributions and encourages a positive and
inclusive club culture.

Imagination Library

This is a program started by Dolly Parton that provides free books to pre-school children
to encourage early reading interest and development. We support this program with
monies raised through our fundraisers and we sign up many children in Hart County to
receive these books.

Interclub

This committee coordinates interaction and communication among and between other
Kiwanis clubs locally and internationally as needed.

Membership

This committee focuses on growing and retaining club members by developing
strategies to attract new members and engage current ones. The committee works on
enhancing member experiences, organizing recruitment efforts and fostering a
welcoming and supportive environment.

Programs

At each Kiwanis meeting, a local speaker presents a program of interest to our
members and visitors. These programs include community affairs, information about
agencies or businesses operating within Hart County as well as a variety of programs
that help children. Each member is responsible for arranging and introducing these
speakers. This committee is responsible for organizing the membership to coordinate
these presentations.
