Kiwanis Last Week’s Program Recap

Rick Glasco shared an overview of the oil industry with a focus on the pipelines that pass through Hart County and under the Savannah River below the Hartwell Dam.

  • Colonial Pipeline: ~5,500 miles (Texas to New Jersey), up to ~2.5 million barrels/day of refined oil (including some blended oils).

  • Plantation Pipeline: ~3,100 miles (Baton Rouge to Washington, DC), ~700,000 barrels/day.

  • Transco: ~10,500 miles (Texas to New York City), ~15 billion cubic feet/day of natural gas.

  • It can take about 18.5 days for product to travel the entire pipeline.

  • A pipeline also runs from Hartwell to Toccoa.

Rick also discussed sweet vs. sour oil, refining byproducts, and how service stations capture fuel vapors during offloading.

  • Ethanol isn’t transported via pipeline because it attracts moisture, which can cause rust and degradation.

  • Ethanol is added at the end of the production cycle.

  • Many service-station pipes are fiberglass to address ethanol’s impact on iron pipe.

  • Direct-injection engines often benefit from ‘Top Tier’ gas with additional cleaning additives (typically available at name-brand stations; also at Costco).

Thank you to Rick for a very interesting program.
