Kiwanis Last Week’s Program Recap
Rick Glasco shared an overview of the oil industry with a focus on the pipelines that pass through Hart County and under the Savannah River below the Hartwell Dam.
Colonial Pipeline: ~5,500 miles (Texas to New Jersey), up to ~2.5 million barrels/day of refined oil (including some blended oils).
Plantation Pipeline: ~3,100 miles (Baton Rouge to Washington, DC), ~700,000 barrels/day.
Transco: ~10,500 miles (Texas to New York City), ~15 billion cubic feet/day of natural gas.
It can take about 18.5 days for product to travel the entire pipeline.
A pipeline also runs from Hartwell to Toccoa.
Rick also discussed sweet vs. sour oil, refining byproducts, and how service stations capture fuel vapors during offloading.
Ethanol isn’t transported via pipeline because it attracts moisture, which can cause rust and degradation.
Ethanol is added at the end of the production cycle.
Many service-station pipes are fiberglass to address ethanol’s impact on iron pipe.
Direct-injection engines often benefit from ‘Top Tier’ gas with additional cleaning additives (typically available at name-brand stations; also at Costco).
Thank you to Rick for a very interesting program.
