Last Week’s Program Recap
Steve Burton invited Brian Fleming to speak about agriculture and the importance of farming in Hart County.
Brian is head of the Hart County Farm Bureau and a 2022 Georgia Farm Bureau Young Farmers & Ranchers Excellence in Agriculture Award winner. He shared how deeply agriculture shapes our area—his family farms about 1,000 acres and keeps 50 cows.
Highlights included Farm Gate value (Hart County ranked #2 in Georgia), major local crops (hay, soybeans, wheat), and Hart County’s role in poultry production (pullets, broilers, table layers, hatchery production), plus turf grass.
Brian also discussed challenges facing farmers today: fewer people working in agriculture (about 1.3% of the population), an aging farmer population, rising foreclosures, pressure to sell land for residential development, tariffs, and crop threats like hogs and deer. He emphasized the importance of being able to feed our own population and encouraged everyone to seek accurate information about agriculture.
Frank is finalizing the Kiwanis golf tournament profit details; more info expected June 1.
Officer and board voting is scheduled for June 1. If you’re interested in serving (President Elect, Vice President, and director openings), please let Seth know.
Thought for the Week
Little Johnny was interested in all the talk about farming, so he asked his buddy, ‘How do you get a country girl’s attention?’ ‘A tractor,’ his buddy told him.
